5 Tips for Summer Skin Protection
As we prepare for summer, I wanted to share some skin care tips.
Sun damage can cause irritation, sun burn, dry skin, and skin cancer. Everyone should protect their skin daily, regardless of the amount of melanin they have.
5 Tips for summer skin protection:
Go outside during times with less UV rays such as morning and early evening. Peak UV ray time is mid-day.
Use physical barriers like umbrellas, hats, long sleeves, and neck covers to protect skin.
Use safe and natural mineral sunscreens (these often contain zinc only which is the same stuff as baby diaper cream). There are many new brands that do not cause the white pasty coloring on your skin.
Avoid sunscreens with unsafe chemicals that are absorbed into the body such as oxybenzone and homosalate. One of my favs, the Environmental Working Group has a nice article highlighting top rated recreational sunscreens.
Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and sun glare.
